Soul Society

Is the afterlife in the universe of Bleach. This is also where Soul Reapers and souls live until they are reincarnated into the Human world. It’s far from sublime. In fact, aside from the slowed aging and lack of hunger, life there is much like that in the living world.

Soul Society consists of the Rukon District, where souls live when they arrive in Soul Society, and Seireitei, which is at the center of Soul Society. The mode of life here closely resembles the one of feudal Japan.

The Human World and Soul Society are parallel to each other and are two sides of the same coin. Families separated by death are rarely reunited in the Soul Society unless they arrive in Soul Society together. People live nestled together like a family of strangers. One never gets hungry (if she or he doesn't have spiritual powers) and aging is slowed to a great extent, with lifespans of 2000 or more years not being unheard of, though such ages are limited to Soul Reapers or other Soul Society dwellers with high spiritual power. Children can be born as they are in the Human world. People can also be killed as regular Humans are, though they are capable of surviving wounds that would normally be considered fatal. A soul that dies in Soul Society is reincarnated on Earth as a new Human with no past memories.

Accessing Soul Society

Soul Reapers enter and leave Soul Society by unlocking the Senkaimon and using a Hell butterfly, Pluses, on the other hand, enter Soul Society through the ritual of Soul Burial. When people die, they are assigned a number to a part of Soul Society according to when they died. Spirits can be born in Soul Society as much as in the living world, with the Soul Reaper acting to balance the souls.
Intruders can pass through the Senkaimon in the same manner, but only in soul form. This allows spiritual beings, such as a Soul Reaper to enter without permission. Humans can also use such a gate through the use of Reishihenkanki which convert solid matter into Reishi.
Finally, Hollows can also directly rip a hole to Soul Society from Hueco Mundo
Government

Spirit King

Soul Society is ruled by the Spirit King, who commonly leaves the running of Soul Society to the Central 46 Chambers and Nobles. The Spirit King lives in the Royal Palace in a separate dimension in the very core of Soul Society, which is protected by the Royal Guards. The King does have a specific system of "speciality duties" which are actively carried out but the exact nature of these duties is unknown. The dimension can only be opened with a tri-pronged golden key fittingly named the Royal Key. The location of this Royal Key is passed down verbally from one Gotei 13 Captain-Commander to the next. It is popular belief that no Soul Reaper has ever seen the king.

Nobility

The Noble Houses of Soul Society have an unclear role in the culture, social and governmental aspects of that dimensions existence. The Four Noble Families carry the most weight and appear to have some influence over the governmental institutions and even institutions outside of

the government. The military have no authority to act against a noble family without evidence that their actions are treasonous to Soul Society.

Four Noble Families

Shihoin Clan

By tradition, the head of the Shihoin family leads the Secret Mobile Unit/Corps. Also known as the

House of Godly Gears, they are the Caretakers of great tools of war said to have been bestowed on

them by the gods.

Kuchiki Clan

There is reason to believe that the captaincy of the 6th division runs in the Kuchiki family, as at least

two members, both of them were family heads, have held the title captain and two other known

members have been lieutenant and 3rd seat respectively. Members of the Kuchiki family have

been known to wear Kenseikan (hair ornament) in their hair, which symbolizes their nobility as one

of Four Noble Families. The Kuchiki family also has a white scarf made by the master weaver,

Tsujishirō Kuroemon III. The scarf is made a silver-white, windflower light silk, and is a family heirloom

that is handed down from generation to generation and is given to each Kuchiki family head. The scarf

alone is worth enough to buy ten mansions in the Seireitei. By tradition, the family has been charged with compiling and protecting the history

of Soul Society. The family resides in the Kuchiki Family Manor.

Third Great Noble House

No information about this house has been revealed.

Fourth Great Noble House

No information about this house has been revealed.

Lower Noble Houses
Kyōraku Family
An old, prestigious and high-ranking noble family.

Ukitake Family
A low-class aristocratic family.

Ōmaeda Family
An aristocratic, rich family. The family has a history of service in the Secret Mobile Unit/Corps.

Kira Family
A lesser noble family.

Judiciary

Central 46: is an organization that serves as the judiciary authority of the Soul Society.

Operating under a mandate from the Spirit King, the influence Central 46 goes well

beyond the boundaries of a judiciary authority and into those of legislative and operative

authorities. They are made up of 40 wise men and 6 judges, selected from all of

Soul Society. They are sealed into an enclave in Sereitei called Tranquil Forest of

Residential Towers which no one else may enter, regardless of their military or civilian

status. They act as a supreme judiciary organization whose authority puts it in direct

control of the legal system. They handle all rulings on Soul Reapers and souls who

have violated the law. Their orders are absolute and no decision has been known to be overturned.

Laws

The ultimate law is to maintain balance.
It is against the law for a Soul Reaper to give their spiritual power to Humans.
It is against the law for a Soul Reaper to use forbidden Kido.
It is against the law for any citizen of Soul Society to create weapons of a dangerous nature not sanctioned by the feudal government. To do so is treason.
It is against the law to commit terrorist action(s) or attempt overthrow of the balance of Soul Society. To do so is treason.
It is against the law to commit murder.
It is against the law to kill a Human that a Soul Reaper has not been ordered to kill.
It is forbidden for a Soul Reaper to acquire or attempt to gain Hollow-like powers.
It is a crime for a Soul Reaper to remain in the Human World longer than a certain time limit.
It is against the law for the Gotei 13 to meddle in the affairs of the noble families unless the family in question breaks one of the laws of Soul Society beyond a shadow of a doubt.
It is by ancient law that two Soul Reapers cannot hold the same Zanpakuto. They must fight for the honour of bearing the spirit, with the spirit going to the winner, and the loser being executed.
It is forbidden for a Soul Reaper to intervene in anything that is related to Hell.
All Modified Souls must be scrapped.

Punishment

Exile: Certain crimes allows for the punishment of exile, commonly stripping a Soul Reaper of their

powers and banishing them to the Human World.

Detention: A punishment not well known among the citizens of Soul Society is the detention of

Soul Reapers. It is commonly reserved for those who have either broken the law, quit the Gotei 13, or

those who just seem dangerous and mentally unstable (as per the government's interpretation).

This is carried out by the Secret Mobile Corp/Unit.

Imprisonment: The Central 46 can sentence a Soul Reaper to be held in an as-yet-unnamed

underground prison for a set amount of time. The prison has eight levels which prisoners are confined

in based on the severity of their crimes.

There are two known forms of execution in Soul Society:

Spirit-Sealing Pit: The Spirit-Sealing Pit is an ancient form of execution in which Soul Reaper criminals are thrown into a pit walled with sekki sekki rock – a type of stone that absorbs spiritual power, preventing those nearby from using their powers. Hollows are then thrown into the pit with the criminals as the means of execution. The practice was considered too barbaric and discontinued. The Spirit-Sealing Pits were converted into garbage dumps.

Sokyoku: The "ultimate punishment", Sokyoku is a form of execution usually reserved for those with extremely strong spiritual powers, namely Captains. The Sokyoku is a giant halberd that utterly destroys a soul on contact. When released, it takes on the form of a phoenix, its true form. It has the destructive power of a million Zanpakuto, and that power is multiplied by a factor of 10 at the moment it pierces its victim.

Military

The armed forces of Soul Society consist of three independent main branches: the Gotei 13, the Kido Corps and the Secret Mobile Unit/Corps.

Gotei 13
The Gotei; 13 Division Imperial Guards, or 13 Court Guard is the organization which most

Soul Reapers join. It is split into thirteen divisions, with several divisions having certain

specializations. The 4th Division is the medical/supply division, the 11th Division is the

combat division, and the 12th Divion is the research/scientific division. The 9th Division

is in charge of newspaper and magazine-related duties. It's unclear if the other divisions

are specialized, as the four above are the only ones who receive any significant attention

apart from their members. Additionally, the 2nd Division is also in charge of Secret Mobile Unit/Corps.

Royal Guard

Also known as the Zero Division, it is made up of former captains of the Gotei 13 who have

been promoted to this level. Only captains of the Gotei 13 know of their existence. They are

said to have considerable power and tactical knowledge. Only the Royal family presides over

them, the Central 46 have no say in them what so ever.

Kido Corps
The Kidō Corps is a separate branch of Soul Society's military that excels in the art of Kido.
It’s a group of specialists presiding over spiritual law. They’re a special organization

comprised of experienced Kido users. Even the Gotei 13 put their trust in their skills. Its

operations are executed in absolute secrecy. It’s usually rare it was to see anyone

from that group.

Stealth Force
Also called the Secret Mobile Unit/Corps or Covert Ops, they have five branches.

The first branch is called the Executive Militia. They carry out missions that involve

combat. They specialize in the unarmed combat technique known as Hakuda and

are able to operate silently and secretly. Their responsibilities include punishment

and assassination of ex-comrades who break the law and acting as scouts during

battle against Hollows.

The Patrol Corps is the second branch of the Stealth Force. They collect intelligence

within the Seireitei. Their appearances are unknown in order to preserve confidentiality.

The third branch of the Stealth Force is the Detention Unit. It’s responsible for the

imprisonment and supervision of all criminals within the Seireitei. They also have another duty known as Special Detention, which concerns those who joined the Gotei 13 but were judged to be a danger to their fellow Soul Reapers. They investigate, apprehend, and keep these individuals sealed away from the rest of Soul Society within the Special Underground Detention Facility, also known as the Nest of Maggots. The activities of this division are shrouded in mystery and remain virtually unknown to the majority of the public as well as most Gotei 13 members up to the level of Lieutenant.

The forth branch is still unknown.

The last branch of the Stealth Force is called the Reversal Counter Force. They serve as the information transmission unit within the Seireitei. They’re a special ops unit that is mobilized whenever a mission is urgent and requires secrecy.

Technology Level
One of the more unusual aspects of Soul Society is its technology level. While the lifestyle and culture of Soul Society is comparable to feudal Japan, they possess technology of a level exceeding that time period. The Soul Reapers Research Institute has developed amazing technology to their credit, mixing technology with organic components. They possess touch-screens and databases which are in use for files and historical documentation storage found extensively in the Great Spirit Book Gallery, which contains all the knowledge and history of Soul Society. View screen technology that is capable of sending signals to the Human World and Dangai, allowing for face to face conferencing.

Rukongai

Rukongai is divided into 320 districts (80 in North Rukongai, 80 in West Rukongai, etc.),

each numbered in descending order on how far they are from the center; this results

in the higher-numbered (and farther) districts decaying into slums. Thus, while

District 1 is peaceful and lawful, District 80 is a hardscrabble, violent, crime-infested.

The duties of the Gotei 13 Divisions include defending allocated districts of Rukongai.

However, which Division is responsible for which district has not been stated. The living

standards in Rukongai decline sharply beyond the fiftieth district, with an increase in

people wearing rags and no footwear.

When the balance of souls between the Human World and Soul Society is endangered, the Soul Reapers can request permission to kill citizens in Rukongai in order to restore the balance of souls between the two worlds.

Seireitei
It’s in the center of Soul Society, a circular wall with four main entrances, each guarded by a Gate Guardian. The walls of Seireitei are made of stone called Seki Seki, a material known to negate all Spiritual Powers. The stone also forms a spherical barrier around the city which stops anything spiritual from breaching it.

The four main entrances are ten days walk apart, each guarded by a

Gate Guardian. These gates are called the Black Ridge Gate (in the North),

the Blue Stream Gate (in the East), the Red Hollow Gate (in the South) and

the White Way Gate (in the West). The Gate Guardians are the guardians of

the four gates of Seireitei.

They are all giants who have the strength to lift the gates made of Seki Seki.

Jidanbō Ikkanzaka: The keeper of the West Gate.
Hikonyūtō: The keeper of the South Gate.
Danzōmaru: The keeper of the North Gate.
Kaiwan: The keeper of the East Gate.

Information about the Seireitei is confidential. What is known is that in the

center of the Seireitei is a white tower known as the Senzaikyū, where criminals

are imprisonedwhile waiting on their judgement; on the hill adjacent to it is

the Sōkyoku, where prisoners are executed. Those permitted to live in the

tranquility of the Seireitei are Soul Reapers and the few families of the nobility.

Soul Reapers live in the Division barracks, while high-ranking officers commute

from their own homes.
